1. Medical history: The doctor begins by asking questions about the patient’s concerns, such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, pain during sexual intercourse, low libido or other sexual issues. Details about the patient’s medical history are also discussed, including any previous surgery, chronic conditions, injuries or current medications.
2. Physical examination: The urologist and andrologist performs a comprehensive physical examination, which may include measuring blood pressure, examining the external genitalia, palpating the testicles and examining the prostate through a digital rectal examination.
3. Laboratory tests: Depending on the patient’s symptoms and concerns, the urologist and andrologist may request laboratory tests, such as blood tests to assess hormone levels, tests for sexually transmitted infections or urine tests to identify infections or other abnormalities.
4. Erectile function assessment: In some cases, it may be necessary to assess the ability to achieve and maintain an erection. This may involve tests using vasodilator medication or specialised equipment to monitor blood flow to the penis.
5. Further diagnostic tests: If necessary, the urologist and andrologist may request additional diagnostic tests, such as genital ultrasound scans, echocardiograms or other specialist procedures to assess specific urological conditions.
6. Discussion of results and treatment: Once all examinations and assessments have been completed, the urologist and andrologist will discuss the results with the patient and establish a diagnosis.
