3D Mammography

Breast Screening

Our facility offers a breast cancer prevention programme that includes tomosynthesis mammography combined with a breast ultrasound.

Tomosynthesis mammography is a three-dimensional 3D mammography technique that reduces and/or eliminates the tissue overlap effect typical of 2D techniques, and is able to detect breast lesions, including those of tumour origin, which may appear as nodular opacities with irregular margins, polymorphic microcalcifications, or areas of structural distortion.

For a complete diagnostic assessment, it is necessary to perform it together with a breast ultrasound.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and its incidence is constantly increasing. Thanks to greater awareness of prevention and improvements in treatment, it is increasingly treatable, especially when diagnosed at an early stage.

For this reason, our facility offers two types of examinations:

  1. Tomosynthesis mammography + Breast ultrasound
  2. Tomosynthesis mammography + Breast ultrasound + Breast specialist examination
Breast Self-Examination

Breast self-examination is a technique that allows women to become more familiar with their breasts, helping them identify the possible presence of a lump, but it does not replace screening examinations. In the presence of symptoms such as a lump, nipple or skin retraction, redness around the nipple, swelling in the armpit, nipple discharge, or in case of any concerns, it is essential to consult your doctor or a specialist.
In all cases, it is recommended to follow the advice of your doctor.

When should you have a mammogram?

According to the recommendations of the National Oncology Commission and the National Research Council (CNR), all women over the age of 40, even in the absence of clinical symptoms of breast disease, should have a MAMMOGRAM every year. Before the age of 40, for effective prevention, in addition to regular breast self-examination and periodic clinical examinations by a family doctor or specialist, an initial baseline mammogram is recommended between the ages of 35 and 40, followed by annual mammographic screening after the age of 40.

Further details on breast self-exam

Breast self-examination should be performed calmly once a month, preferably shortly after your menstrual period if you have not yet reached menopause. When performed correctly, following the advice and instructions below, it helps you become familiar with the anatomy of your breasts.

Start by standing upright in front of a mirror, first with your arms resting by your sides and then raised above your head. Carefully observe the symmetry of your breasts and check for any dimpling or changes in the skin or nipples.

Next, lie on your back on the bed, placing a pillow under your left shoulder. Then place your left hand behind your head. Using the fingers of your right hand, gently feel the inner half of your left breast. Then, after carefully following the movements illustrated in the diagrams, place your arm alongside your body and gently palpate the outer half of the breast, following the directions indicated by the arrows: from bottom to top and from the outer edge towards the centre.

Repeat the same process for the right breast, first palpating the inner half and then the outer half, following the same directions.

If you notice any changes or abnormalities, do not be alarmed, but consult your doctor for further evaluation.
