Coeliac Disease Check-up

Corilab > Coeliac Disease Check-up

What is coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease is a chronic immune-mediated condition that develops in genetically predisposed people following the consumption of gluten.

In people with coeliac disease, gluten triggers an immune response that damages the intestinal villi lining the small intestine, which plays a key role in nutrient absorption. The primary treatment is a strict lifelong gluten-free diet.

The Corilab Coeliac Disease Check-up combines a selection of laboratory tests used as part of the diagnostic investigation for coeliac disease. Gluten is found in wheat and related grains such as spelt and khorasan wheat (Kamut®), as well as barley, rye and triticale. Oats require particular care because standard oat products may be contaminated with gluten.

The results should be interpreted in the context of the individual’s circumstances and reviewed with a doctor, who can recommend any further investigations if necessary.

This check-up includes

  • Total Immunoglobulin A (IgA)

  • IgA Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase Antibodies (tTG-IgA)

  • IgA Anti-Endomysial Antibodies (EMA-IgA)

  • IgA Anti-Gliadin Antibodies

  • IgG Anti-Gliadin Antibodies

How to prepare for your check-up

Before having your blood sample taken, you should fast for 8–12 hours. Alcohol, sugar and coffee may affect the reliability of the results. As smoking may also influence the results, patients are advised not to smoke between waking up and having their blood taken. Only small amounts of water (one or two glasses) are permitted.

Diet

In the days leading up to the blood test, continue to follow your usual diet. Do not begin a gluten-free diet before testing unless instructed by your doctor, as reducing or avoiding gluten may affect the reliability of the results. The purpose of the tests is to assess the levels and characteristics of metabolites normally present in the body. Excessive food intake or a restrictive diet may affect both the laboratory results and their clinical interpretation.

Medication

Unless otherwise instructed by a doctor, patients should have their blood sample taken before taking any medication.

Urine sample collection (standard urine test)

  • Use a sterile disposable container with a secure lid and a label suitable for recording the required patient information. These containers are available from the laboratory or any pharmacy.
  • Wash your hands and genital area before urinating.
  • Collect a small amount of urine from the first urination of the morning, after discarding the initial stream.
  • Deliver the sample as soon as possible.
