How does a sports medicine consultation work?

During a consultation with a sports medicine physician, the patient’s physical condition and overall health are assessed in relation to their participation in sport or physical activity.

The consultation typically involves the following:

  1. Medical history: The doctor begins by gathering detailed information about the patient’s medical history, including any previous or current health conditions, previous surgery, current medications, allergies and other relevant factors. Providing the doctor with a complete overview of your health is important to ensure an accurate assessment.
  2. Physical examination: The doctor carries out a comprehensive physical examination, which may include measuring weight, height and blood pressure, listening to the heart and lungs, checking reflexes, assessing joint mobility and muscle tone, and more. This helps evaluate overall health and identify any physical problems or limitations.
  3. Musculoskeletal assessment: If the patient has specific symptoms or a musculoskeletal problem is suspected, the doctor may perform specific tests to assess the affected area. These may include assessments of muscle strength, flexibility tests, joint stability tests and postural assessment.
  4. Cardiorespiratory assessment: Sports medicine consultations commonly include an assessment of cardiorespiratory function. This may involve tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor the heart’s electrical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness tests such as VO2 max testing, or other specific tests depending on the patient’s needs.
  5. Advice and recommendations: Based on the examination findings, the doctor provides personalised advice and recommendations. These may include suggestions for improving overall physical fitness, guidance on training, injury prevention, diet and nutrition, lifestyle changes, and any necessary therapies or treatments.

In some cases, a specialist assessment by other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists or nutritionists, may also be recommended to obtain a comprehensive picture of the patient’s health and sporting performan

When should you make an appointment with a sports medicine physician?

It is advisable to make an appointment with a sports medicine physician when you need an assessment, treatment or specific advice regarding an injury or medical condition related to physical activity. Some examples include:

  1. Following an injury during physical activity when you need an accurate diagnosis and a rehabilitation plan.
  2. If you experience persistent symptoms or pain during or after physical activity and want to identify the underlying cause.
  3. If you are starting a new training programme or an intense sporting activity and would like a preventive medical check-up.
  4. If you have questions or concerns about optimising sports performance, post-training recovery or other aspects of physical activity.

It is good practice to make an appointment with a sports medicine physician as soon as you experience a problem that may require their specialist expertise.
