What is it?

Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the study and management of hormonal disorders. Endocrinology deals with conditions affecting the endocrine system, which includes glands that produce and release hormones in the human body. The main endocrine glands include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, parathyroid glands, ovaries (in women) and testes (in men).

An endocrinologist is a specialist doctor who diagnoses and treats a wide range of endocrine disorders and other conditions related to hormones.

What conditions does an endocrinologist treat?

An endocrinologist treats disorders of the endocrine system, which includes glands that produce and release hormones in the human body. Some of the main conditions treated by an endocrinologist include:

  1. Short stature
  2. Diabetes
  3. Metabolic disorders
  4. Infertility
  5. Thyroid disorders
  6. Menopause
  7. High blood pressure (hypertension)
  8. Cholesterol problems
  9. Puberty-related disorders (precocious or delayed puberty)
  10. Excessive or insufficient hormone production
  11. Osteoporosis and bone fragility
  12. Endocrine gland tumours

What are the most commonly used procedures in endocrinology?

An endocrinologist is a specialist who can diagnose a wide range of conditions and manage disorders caused by deficiencies or excesses of one or more hormones and substances, which in many cases may persist for long periods of time.

How does an endocrinology consultation work?

An endocrinology consultation focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders, namely conditions affecting the endocrine glands and hormonal imbalances.

A consultation typically involves the following:

Medical history and clinical assessment: The endocrinologist usually begins by taking a detailed medical history, gathering information about the patient’s symptoms, medical and family history, and other relevant factors. A clinical assessment is then carried out, which may include a physical examination and an evaluation of any laboratory test results.

Laboratory tests: The endocrinologist may request a range of laboratory tests to measure hormone levels in the blood, urine or saliva. These may include, for example, thyroid hormones, sex hormones, insulin, growth hormone and other endocrine markers.

Ultrasound: Ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the body’s internal tissues. The endocrinologist may use ultrasound to assess the morphology and size of endocrine glands, such as the thyroid, adrenal glands or gonads.

Biopsy: In some cases, when it is necessary to confirm a diagnosis or assess the nature of a tumour or lesion, the endocrinologist may perform a biopsy. During a biopsy, a small tissue sample is taken from the affected gland and then examined under a microscope to identify any abnormalities.

Diagnostic imaging: The endocrinologist may request imaging tests such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to obtain detailed images of the endocrine glands or identify any abnormalities or tumours.

Assessment of endocrine function: The endocrinologist may use specific tests to assess the function of the endocrine glands. For example, suppression or stimulation tests may be performed to evaluate pituitary or thyroid function. Other functional tests include glucose tolerance testing to assess pancreatic function and growth hormone stimulation tests.

Drug therapy: Once a diagnosis has been made, the endocrinologist may prescribe medication to treat endocrine disorders, such as hormone replacement therapy for hypothyroidism or medication to control diabetes.

When should you make an appointment with an endocrinologist?

It is advisable to make an appointment with an endocrinologist if you experience symptoms such as:

  1. Hormonal disorders: If you suspect you have a hormonal disorder or experience symptoms associated with abnormal activity of the endocrine glands, such as the thyroid, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, parathyroid glands or gonads (ovaries or testes), it is advisable to consult an endocrinologist.
  2. Diabetes: If you have diabetes or suspect you may have the condition, it is important to consult an endocrinologist. This specialist can provide appropriate disease management, assess insulin therapy or oral antidiabetic medication, and provide guidance on diabetes management.
  3. Obesity: If you have weight or appetite-control issues that cannot be managed with standard weight-loss strategies, an endocrinologist can assess the possible causes of obesity and provide targeted treatment.
  4. Growth disorders: If you are concerned about delayed or excessive growth in a child, a paediatric endocrinologist can assess the issue and determine whether hormonal disorders or other underlying causes are involved.
  5. Fertility problems: If you are trying to conceive without success or have concerns about fertility, an endocrinologist specialising in reproductive medicine can help diagnose and treat hormonal disorders or other conditions that may affect fertility.
  6. Osteoporosis: If you have reduced bone density or suspect you may have osteoporosis, an endocrinologist can assess bone health and provide appropriate management to help prevent fractures and future complications.
  7. Endocrine tumours: If you have been diagnosed with an endocrine tumour or suspect you may have one, an endocrinologist may be involved in the assessment, management and treatment of the condition.
