What is a kidney function check-up?

The Corilab Kidney Function Check-up combines a selection of laboratory tests in a single package to assess parameters related to kidney function and the balance of certain electrolytes in the body.

The results should be interpreted in the context of the individual’s circumstances and, where necessary, reviewed with their doctor.

The kidneys filter waste products and excess water from the blood to produce urine. They also help regulate the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance and maintain its acid–base balance.

Laboratory tests can provide information about several parameters related to kidney function. However, they cannot diagnose a specific condition on their own.

How to prepare for your check-up

Before having your blood sample taken, you should fast for 8–12 hours. Alcohol, sugar and coffee may affect the reliability of the results. As smoking may also influence the results, patients are advised not to smoke between waking up and having their blood taken.

Plain water is permitted. Maintain your usual hydration unless Corilab or your doctor has provided different instructions. Avoid strenuous physical exercise before the test, as it may temporarily affect creatinine levels.

Diet

In the days leading up to the blood test, continue to follow your usual diet. An unusually high intake of meat or protein, as well as a restrictive diet, may affect creatinine and urea levels and influence their clinical interpretation.

Medication

Tell your doctor or the laboratory about any medication, vitamin, mineral supplement or other product you are taking, as these may affect kidney function and electrolyte results. Do not stop, delay or change any prescribed treatment unless specifically instructed by your doctor.
