What is it?

Cardiology is the medical specialty focused on the study and treatment of diseases and disorders affecting the heart and arteries.

A cardiologist is responsible for diagnosing, treating and managing conditions affecting the heart and arteries. However, cardiologists do not perform surgical procedures to treat these conditions, as operations are carried out by a specialist cardiac surgeon.

When should you have a cardiology consultation?

It is advisable to schedule an appointment with a cardiologist whenever symptoms or signs arise that may affect heart health. It is important to discuss these symptoms with your GP to determine whether a cardiology consultation is necessary. Warning signs include:

Symptoms that require a cardiology consultation

A medical assessment is recommended if you experience:

  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Sudden chest pain or discomfort extending to the neck, shoulders or arms.
  • Unexplained shortness of breath or significant difficulty breathing during physical exertion.
  • Palpitations and irregular heartbeat.
  • High-risk factors such as hypertension, smoking or a strong family history of heart disease.
  • Finally, it is good practice to have a cardiology check-up if you are a smoker or former smoker, or when starting a new physical activity after the age of 40.

How does a cardiology consultation work?

A cardiology consultation lasts approximately 20 minutes and does not require any specific preparation. It can be carried out on patients of all ages, including children, adults and older people.

It is important to bring any relevant medical documentation you have with you.

The consultation begins with a discussion between the doctor and patient, during which the doctor gathers information about the patient’s lifestyle and medical history.

This is followed by a physical examination. Once the consultation is complete, the doctor may, if necessary, prescribe further tests and recommend appropriate treatment, either medication or other forms of therapy.
