Overview

Gynecology is a medical specialty focused on the physiology and pathologies of the female reproductive system. Specialists in gynecology are responsible for diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders affecting the female reproductive tract. They frequently collaborate with other medical specialists to deliver comprehensive, integrated patient care.

Gynecology plays an essential role in ensuring the health and well-being of women of all ages, providing preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic care for a wide range of conditions affecting the female reproductive system.

The role of the gynecologist is not limited to diagnosing and treating conditions, but also encompasses monitoring and supporting patients throughout pregnancy.

Additionally, the gynecologist provides support with contraception options and the management of sexual and reproductive health conditions. Women can schedule routine check-ups for procedures such as Pap tests, breast exams, ovulation monitoring, and sexual and reproductive health consultations.

What conditions are treated by a gynaecologist?

The gynaecology specialist treats a wide range of conditions affecting the female reproductive system, including:

  • Infections: The gynecologist diagnoses and treats vaginal infections, conditions affecting the external genital tract, and infections of the ovaries and uterus. These infections may be bacterial, fungal, or viral in origin.
  • Benign Tumors: The gynecologist manages non-cancerous conditions such as ovarian cysts, vulvar and vaginal cysts, condylomas (genital warts), and other benign conditions of the female reproductive tract.
  • Congenital Anomalies: Identifies and manages congenital anomalies that may affect the female reproductive system.
  • Pregnancy-Related Conditions: During pregnancy, she manages various clinical situations such as ectopic pregnancies (where the embryo develops outside the uterus), miscarriages, and other complications that may arise throughout the gestational period.
  • Endometriosis: A chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterine cavity, causing pain and other symptoms. A gynecologist is typically involved in diagnosing and managing endometriosis.
  • Uterine Fibroids (Myomas): These are benign tumors that develop in the uterus. The gynecologist can recommend various treatment options based on the size, location, and symptoms associated with the uterine fibroids.
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) refers to infections involving a woman’s internal reproductive organs. The gynecologist diagnoses and treats PID to prevent long-term complications.
  • Pelvic Pain: The gynecologist evaluates and manages acute and chronic pelvic pain, which can stem from various causes, including conditions affecting the reproductive system.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, and many others.

Additionally, the gynecologist’s role is to care for the woman throughout pregnancy, labor, and delivery, as well as to provide postpartum care when needed.

What to expect during Your gynecological examination

During a gynecological examination, the specialist evaluates the female reproductive system, including both the external and internal genitalia. The patient is comfortably seated on the examination table with legs supported in stirrups. The doctor performs a visual inspection of the vulva and inserts a small, single-use plastic speculum into the vagina, allowing clear visualization of the cervix and the performance of a Pap test.

Next, the physician performs a pelvic exam, inserting a finger into the vagina to evaluate the uterus and ovaries. To support the examination, a transvaginal ultrasound may be performed to assess or check for suspected conditions such as fibroids, endometrial polyps, or ovarian cysts.

Gynecological examinations and pelvic ultrasounds are generally painless. If a patient experiences muscle tension, the specialist will gently guide her to relax, ensuring a more comfortable and thorough examination.

A gynecological examination serves to assess the health of the female reproductive system and rule out the presence of conditions or diseases. Women are advised to undergo a gynecological check-up and Pap test periodically, ideally every 1 to 2 years. Early diagnosis of conditions such as uterine cancer, fibroids, or endometriosis significantly increases treatment success rates.

When to schedule a Gynecological appointment

Once women reach sexual maturity, an annual gynecological examination is recommended—even in the absence of specific symptoms or concerns—to effectively monitor the health of their reproductive system.

It is important to consult a gynecologist for any concerns regarding the reproductive system. These include increased vaginal discharge, changes in color or odor, any type of pelvic pain, painful periods, changes in normal menstrual bleeding, or following unprotected casual intercourse, among other issues.

Gynecologists are also the primary point of reference for women facing fertility challenges and difficulty conceiving, as well as the leading specialists throughout pregnancy.
